Summary

Two herbal products, Sutherlandia and Hypoxis were shown in vitro to inhibit CYP450 3A4 activity 70-96% and 31-79%, respectively. The co-administration of these herbals with antiretroviral agents may result in early inhibition of drug metabolism and transport followed by decreased drug exposure and possibly antiretroviral failure and/or toxicity. It is noted that extreme caution should be used when administering antiretrovirals with herbals [104].
