Study Design

The data stems from a review article describing the theoretical interactions between these agents. No direct drug interaction study exists between etravirine and itraconazole.

Study Results

The potential pharmacokinetic interactions of etravirine with systemic antifungal drugs is of interest since many of the azole antifungals are commonly used in patients with HIV infection and some are also inhibitors of CYP3A4, CYP2C9 and/or CYP2C19.

Study Conclusions

Etravirine may be combined with antifungal agents without dose adjustments. Co-administration of etravirine with fluconazole or voriconazole significantly increases etravirine exposure. Safety data at these increased etravirine exposures is limited, therefore, etravirine should be administered with caution when combined with these antifungals.
